David William Young
Artist of Devon & Dartmoor

David William Young has gained a widely admired reputation over his career for his meticulously detailed and atmospheric oil paintings. His work covers a wide range of subjects, though in the publics view he will always be thought of as a Devon landscape artist known for his Dartmoor paintings.

His work is noted for a deep understanding and feeling for the effects of light, colours and textures that make up the Devon landscape he loves so much.

Covering the lower slopes of the imposing Tors of northern Dartmoor is the ancient woodland of Meldon.

These deciduous woods with their mixture of mature trees such as the oak and the under storey of hazel coppice harbour the Spring delight of a bluebell panorama.

In this painting I have tried to convey the effect of the sun breaking through the woodland canopy to create a blaze of blues and greens.

The Tamar Valley, which divides Devon & Cornwall, was once famous for its orchards and early Spring daffodils which thrived in its mild climate.

Here and there a few remain such as this apple & cherry orchard at Capel Tor beside the middle reaches of the river Tamar.

The orchard, a ten minute walk down through the woods, has along with its surrounding landscape always been at the heart of my soul. My father drank its cider and I have painted this part of the valley countless times as I began my life as an artist.
